Nervousness is an interesting experience. The feeling of anxiousness you get when you are about to take on a challenge whose outcome is uncertain causes all sorts of physiological reactions. Your blood pressure elevates. Your face flushes. Your heart rate rises and your palms get sweaty. You get fidgety, starting to do the pee-pee dance, only you don’t really have to go. You know the feeling, we all do.
As opposed to looking at it as nervousness, though, I would like you to try an exercise in perspective. Look at it as excitement, instead. Think about it, what happens when you get excited? Your blood pressure elevates. Your face flushes. Your heart rate rises and your palms get sweaty. You get fidgety, starting to do the pee-pee dance…you see where I’m going with this? Your body reacts in the same manner to both excitement and nervousness, it is only your mind that associates a negative connotation with the former as opposed to the latter.
I bring this up because as D.W. and I are working on the second book in the Necromancers’ Pride saga, Necromancers’ Pride – Tides of War, there are plenty of unknown variables that could make us nervous. Are we honoring the characters we’ve created? Are we giving them the proper voice? Are we making the right decisions as we continue to develop the world of Tarune? The list goes on and on.
However, nervousness is crippling, while EXCITEMENT is EMPOWERING.
Do not allow the nay-sayers to sap your excitement in beginning a new endeavor. Do not allow any outside force to replace the thrill you feel at pursuing your dream with the crushing negativity of self-doubt. If you believe you can succeed, you are right. If you believe the contrary, you are also right. What do you believe in yourself?
What dreams are you excited about pursuing? How can we support you in seeing them come to fruition?
