Lore

Lore – noun: a body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth.

In epic fantasy, lore is a key component of world building. Indeed, in any tale, the lore of the world must be given full measure and forethought in order to intrigue and immerse the reader. In other genres, though, it is typically just called backstory. We in fantasy get to take full advantage of the etimology meant to beguile and add mysticism. To be fair, all genres have their lore, sports are rife with the lore of the heroes of yesteryear, but I think we can all agree that lore just lends itself to usage alongside words of fantasy.

I say all this to say that the lore of the world of fantasy into which you decide to commit your time is vital to your enjoyment of that world. Someone recently asked me how long it took us come up with some of our ideas.

My answer was: how long does it take the wind to blow?

Yes, that is an apt metaphor, because D.W. is so full of hot air. But…I digress. It is a constant and consistent process because we want the lore of Necromancers’ Pride to be as fully realized as possible.

Lore enriches us. It vitalizes our characters. It gives to the world a sense of history, a set of immutable truths from which a foundation of future story creation can be set. It is fun to create. It is even more fun to build on that initial creative spark and ensure that it is developing logically. Lore has a life of its own. It breathes and grows as does the story it is supporting.

We in the Necromancers’ Pride family hope you enjoy the lore behind our characters’ adventures as much as we hope you are enjoying the adventures themselves.

By the way, lore also means: the surface on each side of a bird’s head between the eye and the upper base of the beak, or between the eye and nostril in snakes. That was just an FYI from us to you. What does that have to do with fantasy? Not too much, really. However, if you ever find yourself in a life-or-death Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy battle of wits, we have now armed you with one haymaker of a random factoid.
