Time o’ give me time

running in timeTime. It seems that it, like our vacations, is always in short supply. It is strange, because I so often feel like I have somehow been cheated out of a few hours. I know I am supposed to get 24, yet strangely, I always seem to run out of day at the end of my time. I took a time management class once, but I got there late, so I must have missed all the important tips. It seems like the busier I get, well … the busier I get. I always look forward to leap year because I figure, hey, one extra day, right? I should be able to get all caught up with 24 EXTRA hours. It didn’t work out quite that way this time around. Thus, here I am, busily trying to catch up to my schedule.

Has this feeling ever washed over you? It is one of those things that is easy to let slip. The best intentions are often just out of reach because we don’t have time to get to them. As we get closer and closer to the launch of Necromancers’ Pride – Quest for Elderstone (January 2014 for all those who may somehow have missed my subtle reminders), I am more aware than ever of how quickly time can sneak by. Maybe it is that relativity thing. You know, when time seems to fly by when you are enjoying yourself, yet feels like day old molasses when you are laboring through some menial task. The problem is, it isn’t the feel of time that is the problem, it is the time itself. I have just as much crap on my plate when I am enjoying myself as I do when I am concerned about all the crap on my plate. As for D.W., well, the tic-tic-tic of the clock might as well be nails on a chalkboard.

That is the great thing about writing in a fantasy realm (more on that topic at another time), time is yours to control. In a fantasy world, it can be manipulated to the smallest increments, or have the broad reach of sweeping out across the millennia. Now, if only I could get Pacific Standard Time to work that way. The key thing is that in order to successfully move your fantasy work forward you must make time. Those extra hours of beauty sleep might need to be sacrificed in order to properly world build, no matter how much you might need them. I can attest to that first hand. D.W. would need to hibernate like a grizzly to get anywhere near beautiful, and that’s just not going to happen.

It comes down to prioritizing. What is it that you deem worthy of time and what is it that you will let slip away? Too often, we put off those pages we need to write because we just don’t have that one extra hour.

I found some great tips on time management in an article from Entrepreneur that I want to share with you.

Hopefully, it will help you to assess what you need to do in your life to save that precious, most fleeting of commodities. This must have been what they covered before I got to the class. But, hey, I did make it there early for lunch.

What do you do to help you stay on schedule? How do you keep time from slipping past you?

This is your community. We want to hear from you.

Oh man, does this speak to me! If only I had an extra six hours each day, the things I would accomplish! The best part of every single day is when I get home and see my family. That is when I cherish my time the most, there is never enough time for that.

I wish I could have a magical fairy to grade papers and do dishes for me while I enjoy time with my family. No matter how much I manage my time, there is never enough time.
