Happy hump day, everyone. I don’t think that Geico camel truly appreciates how great a gig he’s got. Anyway, I was talking to D.W. earlier about how to continue to reach readers with our work. We bandied back and forth for awhile about different ideas for social networking, delved into detailed discussion about multi-level marketing, and basically ran ourselves ragged around Robin Hood’s barn in search of new ways to utilize new media. By the way, that Robin Hood, he’s got a big, confusing barn.

As we were talking, D.W.’s son Aragorn (I just LOVE that name) came in with a question.

“Daddy, I was looking at the character pictures on the website. Who is the Necromancer?”

“Lord Cartigas,” D.W. replied.

“Oh. Well, maybe you should put that on the picture so that people will know.”

With that, he turned and walked away.

So simple. So easy. We thought it was clear who the Necromancer was. It obviously wasn’t to someone who falls directly into our key demographic. He gave us the solution. He is far smarter and more dashingly handsome than ever his father could hope to be. Perhaps I will write the next book with Aragorn, instead.

At any rate, we added the title to Lord Cartigas to help with any confusion. It got us thinking further, not only about marketing, but about everything in regards to the book and reaching people with the story. You must understand, in today’s world of information consumption, it isn’t enough to have a good story. No one will read it if no one knows about it.

So, we then turned to my daughter.

“Honey, how can we get more people your age to read the book?”

“Do more on Instagram, Daddy. And put the book up on book club review sites for kids and teens.”

With that, she turned and walked away.

So simple. So easy. Now, of course, we had spoken about raising our profile in both of those arenas, but sometimes it takes the simplest of suggestions to truly shed light on the best course of action.

I bring this up today simply because we are going through all of this for the first time. We rise and fall, succeed and fail with every passing day. As we experience it, you will hear about it. Sometimes, the best solutions are found in the most difficult place for us to look, right in front of our own noses.

    Have you guys done focus groups with your primary Target demographics? Treat about 20 kids to a pizza party to read the book with them. Maybe hand out the book to them 1 weekend. Then have them to come back in the next weekend or 2 and discuss it. During the discussion ask about Marketing tools as well(action figures, cartoons, T-shirts, games, apps)
